Intramural sports provide opportunities for all

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. --  Sinking the match winning putt in golf, to hitting a walk-off homerun in softball, to draining a buzzer-beating shot in basketball.

These are just three of the opportunities the 11th Force Support Squadron intramural sports program offers to members of Joint Base Andrews.

"The goal of the program is to enhance morale, spirit and physical fitness," said Daniel Ladjevich, 11th FSS sports director. "Also, to contribute to the development of the individual unit and base espirit de corps, encourage friendly competition and provide a wide variety of sports activity."

Basketball, flag football, soccer, golf, softball and volleyball are all options members of JBA can take part in.

The sports calendar runs throughout the year providing an opportunity for all to participate.

The program is a great opportunity for members, whether military or civilian, new to the base to play a sport or cheer on their squadron, according to Ladjevich.

On average more than 1,000 members participate in intramural sports throughout the year.

Military members, Department of Defense civilian workers and dependents can participate in the program.

"The main reason is the comradery; it's one of the few times all the attorneys get together and play a sport," said Staff Sgt. Jose Camacho, Air Force Legal Operations Agency, Labor Law paralegal. "So this is one chance to have fun and hopefully win a championship."

But it's not all about building comradery, according to Camacho.

"It's fun, we see them (other squadrons) during pickup games but when it's game time, that friendliness goes away and the competitiveness kicks in," Camacho said.
