JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md -- Joint Base Andrews’ response to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) remains in compliance with federal regulations and supports Maryland and Virginia governors’ statewide stay-at-home orders that will take effect today.
“Since declaring a public health emergency and shifting to Health Protection Condition (HPCON) Charlie, we have made significant adjustments to the way we do business,” said Col. Andrew Purath, 11th Wing and JBA commander. “All of the installation measures we have in place support the new executive orders that limit movement to essential trips.”
Maryland and Virginia’s stay-at-home orders prohibit residents from leaving home, except for trips considered essential, such as food and medicine. Travel to and from work is authorized for federal entities and will not impact personnel who need to travel to and from the installation to perform their duties.
“As COVID-19 continues to affect our communities, our focus remains prevention,” said Purath. “We’ve quickly passed the point where we can isolate ourselves as an installation and we will work closely with our community partners to ensure we are social distancing, continuing to practice good hygiene and avoiding large gatherings.”
JBA implemented precautions throughout the base to minimize the risk of spreading COVID-19, including changes to procedures at its gates and medical facilities, cancellation of in-person gatherings, restricted ability to travel, and closure of certain base services and facilities.
“This pandemic has changed the way of life for JBA and the community that surrounds the military,” said Purath. “As we continue to make difficult decisions, our priority remains the safety and health of our Airmen and the surrounding community. We will continue to work with our military and community partners to accomplish this goal.”
