The 459th Air Refueling Wing Human Resource Development council hosted a health fair at the base theatre Sunday in an effort to increase awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection of diseases among military personnel.

The HRDC health fair featured booths that provided information on prevention, healthy living, the need to take care of one's body and different agencies available for the Andrews community.

"The mission of the Health Fair was to provide a comprehensive list of services and options to reservists and their families," said Major Nicole King-Campbell, director of the HRDC. "We used an out of the box approach by mixing nonprofit off base organizations with our military medical and our fitness."

Various organizations from on and off base participated in the event including the 459th Services Flight, Southern Maryland Hospital, the American Pain Foundation, Mental Health Association of Prince George's County, the Epilepsy Foundation, and the National Kidney Foundation.

"Education to the public is the biggest benefit of participating in an event like this one," said Rose Seisle of the Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

The Southern Maryland Hospital Center offered literature reminding participants about minimizing risk factors and disease prevention and vouchers for complimentary cholesterol, weight, blood sugar and blood pressure screenings.

The HRDC health fair also offered scalp treatments, 3-minute facials, and massages as part of a mobile spa demonstration by Tech. Sgt. Jamyra Alexander-Jordan an HRDC committee member. Sergeant owns her own mobile spa company, and donated her services to the health fair.

Major King-Campbell said there was a lot of preparation put into this event, from setting up the clinic to accommodate the attendees to having organizations commit to this event.
"It was a great success because we had the HRDC working as it should be," Major King-Campbell said. "HRDC members sacrificed time and funding to make this happen and I am very grateful for all the help that was give from the commanders and all of the troops."
