40 degree water in the Chesapeake Bay? Check.

A wild bunch of 459th Air Refueling Wing servicemembers and civilians ready to go for a swim? Check.

Plenty of generous donations gathered to help those in need? Check.

That list is all part of the 16th Anniversary Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge, scheduled to take place at Sandy Point State Park, Md., on Jan. 28.

The event, which benefits the Maryland Special Olympics, has hosted nearly 10,000 plungers in the past, including individuals from the 459 ARW.

Tech. Sgt. Warren Hiller, 459th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, has helped to coordinate the 459 ARW's participation and donations for the past six years. He's a repeat plunger again this year and said he was ready to take on the icy tempartures for a good cause.

"I thought it was a great idea to help out. You raise money and get cold for a few minutes, but it's all worth it," Sergeant Hiller said.

Sergeant Hiller said the annual event has brought out in an increasing number of participants from the wing each year. Currently, those who wish to take a dip in the bay and help the Maryland Special Olympics are asked to make a pledge of $50. According to the MSP Polar Bear plunge website, money raised for the event will go toward sports training and competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Sergeant Hiller said the wing is still looking for volunteers and it's not too late to sign up. The 459 ARW plunge team, Crazy Yankee, can be found on the website where individuals can register, www.plungemd.com.
